Tempe’s Social Host Ordinance

Tempe, the first city in the East Valley to pass the Social Host Ordinance, took a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of its community members. This ordinance, known as Article 3 Nuisance Parties and Unlawful Gatherings, came into effect in February 2012, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Tempe Coalition. The Tempe Coalition played a pivotal role in bringing this ordinance to fruition.

Under the revised ordinance, anyone providing alcohol to an individual under the age of 21 can be held responsible. Importantly, if the host providing alcohol to underage youth is younger than 18, the responsible party also includes the juvenile’s parents or guardians.

Tempe’s Social Host Ordinance stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to maintaining a safe and responsible community. By understanding the ordinance’s provisions and consequences, we can ensure that our events and gatherings adhere to the law and prioritize the well-being of our youth.
